Introducing SkillSpace: Targeted Executive Functioning Support for Middle and High School Students

Chicago Center for Behavioral Health is thrilled to introduce our new add-on service, SkillSpace: Executive Functioning Check-ins, a flexible, growth-oriented service designed to help middle and high school students strengthen these essential skills.

For many students, strong academic performance depends on more than just understanding the material. Skills like planning, time management, organization, and emotional regulation play a critical role in whether assignments get completed, deadlines are met, and goals are achieved. These abilities — known as executive functioning skills — are essential for success both in school and in life.

How SkillSpace Works

SkillSpace offers weekly or biweekly 30-minute 1:1 sessions with Chicago Center for Behavioral Health therapists throughout the school year. Each session is tailored to address the student’s immediate academic needs while also building long-term strategies they can carry forward.

Areas of focus include:

  • Planning and prioritizing tasks

  • Time management techniques

  • Organization and system-building

  • Emotional regulation tools

  • Real-time academic help and accountability

To reinforce learning, each participant receives an Executive Functioning Workbook, created by CCBH, allowing them to track their progress and apply strategies between sessions.

A Complement to Therapy

SkillSpace is not a replacement for therapy. Instead, it is designed to work alongside it. While therapy addresses broader emotional and mental health needs, SkillSpace focuses on targeted, practical skill-building that can be difficult to cover in depth during standard therapy sessions.

Students already working with a therapist are encouraged to continue that relationship while using SkillSpace to strengthen their executive functioning and academic follow-through, or are warmly invited to begin sessions with a CCBH therapist in addition to SkillSpace sessions.

This program is ideal for:

  • Students with ADHD, anxiety, perfectionism, or other executive functioning challenges

  • Teens who benefit from structured support and real-time problem solving

  • Learners who need consistent accountability to stay on track throughout the school year

Why It Matters

When students have the tools to manage their time, organize their work, and regulate their emotions, they’re better able to focus, reduce stress, and build confidence. SkillSpace equips them with these tools — and the guidance to use them effectively.
